The central heat hit Patience as she entered her home, thawing her out. In the short walk from her car to her front door, the frigid February weather had chilled her to the bone.

Removing her coat and boots, she put both in the closet and headed straight for the couch, plopping down on the cushions. Grabbing the remote, she flipped the television on as she rested her head against the decorative throw pillows. She planned to take full advantage of the free morning by lounging and watching her favorite morning shows.

She was twenty minutes into the game show before her cell rang. Scooping it up from the coffee table, she answered. “Hey T.”

“Hey sis, I’m sure you’re back in bed—”

“No, I’m just chillin’ on the couch, watching TV,” Patience cut in, twisting strands of hair around her finger. “What’s up?”

“Oh. Well, I’m just calling to see if we’re still on for tomorrow.”

Patience rolled her eyes. “You mean taking the three-hour drive back to Mom’s house in the middle of winter, because big sis decided after all these years that she wants to sell it and needs us there to take inventory of what needs to be removed?” She pulled her feet up on the couch. “Yes, we’re still on.”

“Her petty ass won’t so much as let us step foot in there without her, now she’s just willing to hand it over to some stranger?” A sigh emitted from Toni. “I’m not going to lie, I at least hoped she’d pass it down to the girls, or her own child should she ever decide to have one. I mean, times may not have always been good there, but it was still part of our lives, and I’d hate to see it go.”

“Yeah, well Mom left the house solely to Angie when she died, so neither you nor I have any say so in what she does with it.” Patience examined her manicured nails. “Though for the record, I don’t want her to sell it either.”

“Hmm, maybe she could move back there, should she ever get sick of Trevor’s ass and leave him,” Toni sneered.

Rubbing between her eyes with two fingers, Patience shook her head. “Toni—”

“I know, I know you don’t have to say it. I took it too far.”

“Well, at least you admitted it this time.” Patience stretched her free arm. “Anyway, I’ll meet you at your house tomorrow by ten.”

“Sounds like a long ass day, but a plan.” Shuffling of papers resonated through the phone. “Enjoy your day off and yes, I’m jealous. It’s tax season, so my ass is being taken through the ringer. Damn near every client has been stressing me out…except your man, of course. He has his shit together.”

Patience chuckled a bit. “He’d be happy to hear that.”

“When is he getting back in town?”

Releasing a sigh, Patience eyed the framed photo of him and her on the end table. “Late tonight. His flight is supposed to get in around ten-thirty or so.” Michael had been out of town on business for the past week, and to say that she missed him was an understatement.
